Gunmen Kill 9 Female Health Workers In Kano

Polio Vaccinators at work -Photo Credit: Fred de Sam Lazaro

Unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants have killed nine female workers involved in polio vaccinations in two separate incidents in the city of Kano.

The gunmen riding on tricycles opened fire on health workers at Hotoro Haye and Shargalle Health Centre in the Kano metropolis as the health workers prepare their polio vaccination cocktails for the day.

Two women were felled by the militants bullets at Unguwa Uku while seven others died from the lethal attack on Shargalle Health Centre in attacks that took place thirty minutes apart.

Police spokesperson Musa Majia confirmed the attacks to journalists stating that the gunmen had fled the scene of the attack before security agents could reach the area.

Several Islamic clerics are opposed to polio vaccination claiming that it was a western scheme to limit Muslim population in Nigeria.

Nigerian Girl Attacked With Acid in London Gets Free Facial Reconstruction Surgery

A Nigerian girl, Naomi Oni was scarred for life when a mysterious figure wearing a muslim niqab threw acid in her face as she walked home from work. She has no idea who did this to her and has spent the past month having skin grafts and almost went blind, although she has now recovered her vision in her left eye and has partial sight in her right.

To make matters worse, she is the sole carer for her disabled mother Marian Yalekhue who is 52. She told her story;

'I’d been working a late shift and was talking to my boyfriend about what we were going to do for New Year when I saw this Muslim woman wearing a niqab covering her face,' she told the Evening Standard.

'I thought it was a bit strange at that time of night, but she didn’t say anything and I kept on walking.

'Then I felt a splash on my face. It burned and I screamed out. I started running and screaming, holding my face, all the way home. I didn’t look back.

'I got home and I was screaming and banging on the door. I was hysterical. Luckily my godmother, who is a pharmacist, was at home with my mum and she helped me and kept dipping my face in water and trying to calm me down until the police and ambulance got there.

'I was in shock. Saying: "Who would do that? Who would do that?" How could anyone do this?'.
She has released the shocking images of her disfigured face in an appeal for help to catch the attacker whose identity was concealed behind the Muslim women’s dress which completely covers the face apart from the eyes.
Ms Oni decided to speak out after police failed to establish any motive behind the December 30 attack or identify a suspect.

She said the attack had 'destroyed' her life and left her too afraid to venture out or even show her face in public.

'I look in the mirror and it just isn’t me. I’ll never look the same again,' she said. 'I’ve always been outgoing and confident in my job and in my personal life, used to getting attention for the way I dress or my hair, but now I don’t want anyone looking at me.

'I don’t want people to see me in public. I don’t want to get the Tube or the bus. If I have to go to the hospital I take a taxi.

'I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go back to my job. I was planning to go to college in September to study media and fashion, but I don’t even know if I’ll be able to do that.'

The store assistant has been told she faces months if not years of skin grafts and further plastic surgery and even then is likely to be left with severe facial scarring.

She and her mother say they are too afraid to go back to their council flat in Dagenham. They are currently sleeping on a friend’s sofa-bed after turning down the offer to be rehoused in Tottenham on safety grounds.

Ms Oni said she had been inspired by the story of Katie Piper, the model who launched a charity and spoke out publicly after falling victim to an acid attack orchestrated by her boyfriend, but that she would never feel safe with her attacker still at large.

'Even with the support of my family and friends and boyfriend I feel very alone,' she said. 'Nothing is going to be same anymore. Her story

The London Evening Standard reported today that Naomi Oni, a 20-year old London based Nigerian who was attacked with acid by an unknown person dressed in niqab a few minutes away from her home, will be receiving a free facial reconstruction surgery by one of the world's top cosmetic Surgeons, Dr. Cap Lesesne.

Dr. Lesesne, an American surgeon who has done re-constructive surgery as well as normal operations on hollywood actors, United States Senators, royalty, read of Naomi’s travail in the Evening Standard and decided to offer his heart- felt service.

Ms. Oni  suffered terrible burns on her face, neck, arms, legs, head and body, she is partly blind in her right eye and doctors fear she would need years of continous treatment before she is fully ok.

Mother Reports Murder of Her 20-Year Old Son By His Room Mates on Facebook

Obinna middle, with his supposed friends                                   Obinna and mum
A Mother, Ngozi Awa has reported on her Facebook page that her son, Obinna Okereke Awa, a 20-year old student of Abia State University is dead.

Here is what she wrote; I have just been informed that my second son, Obinna Okereke Awa is dead. He was lured and killed and buried, exactly two weeks today by his course mates and room mates, flanking him here, Edwin Ogbonna and Ikechukwu Uka. All fourth year Law students of Abia State University.
They feigned ignorance of his whereabouts until yesterday.

My son was to be 21 years come May 7th, 2013. May God be magnified! - Mrs Ngozi Awa.

She also wrote this om her page in pains;

Even in my pains
Even in my shock
Even in my sorrow
I still say: Thank you, Lord!

God! How I cried and tore myself up
How I searched and searched
How I paryed and prayed
How I hoped and hoped
chest heaving, tears dripping...

Now, after denial of knowledge of where my son was
After scampering away from school for two weeks
Obinna's blood has started chasing them out to confess of how they took him out.

Obinna Awa of all people!
Obinna my strong son!
Obinna aaa!

It is well.
I am coping Obinna.
Daddy is devastated.
You should have seen the visitors to the house today
Heard the incessant phone calls, some we answered, others we could not lift our hands or voices to respond to.

Chai!
How can students plan to eliminate another's life?
For what?
Did you insult any of them?
Did you wink at their girlfriends?
Did you, Obinna, boast to them?

God, console my poor son!
God, touch our hearts.

Ideas for small scale business ventures

The western nations and the Asian tigers we admire so much today as industrialised nations are actually countries that have come to appreciate the role of industry in their economies. Industry is tangible; it can be seen in the ways in which it improves the lives of citizens in an economy.
Those placed in charge of the economy in Nigeria often use figures to replace tangibles. The economy may be said to be growing (statistically) but the proof of those figures should be evident all around us. A few weeks ago, I wrote on the ceramics industry and the spate of closures that have occurred in the last two decades in that subsector – all happening while we were busy importing exotic ceramic items to titivate Abuja.
Some respondents to that article complained that I was getting the government overly involved in issues that should be tackled by the private sector; citing the economies of the developed world that are essentially private sector driven as examples. I engage government in my write-ups because industry, though it deploys human dexterity, natural resources, and technology; needs the oxygen that only favourable policy provisions can supply to thrive; and this is the government’s purview! For example, we do not have robust ceramics industries today, not because we have never had them; or because the people have no drive for industry. The ones we had collapsed because they were not protected by deliberate, clued-up policies that could sustain their operations. Capital and its drivers only plough where they are sure to make profit. If the operating environment is fouled up by stifling laws and ambiguities, businesses face an inevitable death and investors flee.
When former President Obasanjo rolled out a progressive policy on cassava development in 2002, it spawned many small scale industries as enumerated in my article on that sector; however, when that policy was needlessly reversed in 2008 by late Alhaji Musa Yar’adua, over 90 per cent of those new businesses closed shop! Policymakers and drivers ought therefore to be more responsive in handling their sensitive and privileged offices to encourage the growth of industry in Nigeria. The same can be said of our long lost tin, leather, groundnut, etc. economies which are now myths that we keep recycling over coffee at conference tables. Those ‘good old days,’ can still be reinvented with the right policies.
It is not all bad news. The transformation agenda of the present administration has articulated programmes that would lay the foundation for Nigeria’s much awaited industrial take-off.  If the pronouncements in this document are not mere lip service, we might be headed for a believable departure from underdevelopment. One of the conditions for an industrial launch, according to a field of thought, is agricultural production and the current Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina as people now speak of him, is all geared to take agricultural production to the next level.
Agricultural production and processing of primary goods however, require the input of science and technology to impact the socio-economic life of the citizenry. As discussed in my last article, modern day manufacturing incorporates speed, volume, convenience, quality, quality control, reliable and attractive packaging into its total appeal. The recently convened National Science and Innovation exhibition by the current Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Ita Okon Bassey Ewa, is therefore an auspicious initiative. It portends that there is now official support for innovation and this is good news for our aspirations to become an industrialised nation.
At the exhibition, I spotted two small scale ideas that my readers, most of whom are in search of small scale business ideas would be interested in. These innovations from diverse research institutes in the country are proof that our Research Institutes, subseuquently (RIs) are not merely lounging on their rocking chairs and picking their teeth as many people believe. They are coming up with ideas that would reduce the drudgery of our current production methods, deliver increased volume of products within a shorter period of time and generate income faster.
At the Federal Institute of Industrial Research stand was a mechanised okra slicer and dryer. The inventor, Felix Ajuebor, said that with as little as N40, 000.00; an entrepreneur can buy the equipment with which to start the business of packaging sliced, dried okro for sale. This two-piece equipment is one of the ideas that will mitigate post harvest loss and make okro available during the dry season. The already packaged products were nicely displayed and on demonstration, the okro was ready to eat within five minutes of boiling, retaining its green colour. Director-General of FIIRO, Dr. Gloria Elemo, says that research is still ongoing to perfect the technology. Keeping life of the product is six months to one year. The supermarkets should have this on their shelves!
Another interesting product on display was a mini bioreactor developed by the National Biotechnology Development Agency, NABDA. According to Dr. Andrew Keswet and other scientists at the stand, the bioreactor which stokes with bio-wastes, generates cooking heat suitable for household use and for restaurants. The gadget goes for N150,000 – N350,000.00 per unit. Biogas is environmentally friendly, especially as it mops up wastes and provides a cheap alternative to petroleum fuel.
The entrepreneur needs to be curious, curious enough to explore new ideas. Nigeria’s RIs are brimming with business ideas that can be applied to grow indigenous industry.

The Story of a Nigerian Boy. PARENTS Were Killed in Kaduna Riots of 2002.

This is the story of a young boy whose parents were murdered during 2002 riots in Kaduna. He was aged 11 years at the time. His parents, Mr Austine and Mrs Josephine Moses, were missionaries until they met their untimely death. The boy left his house to play football but returned home to see that all his parents had laboured for had been razed down and he would never see his mother and father again.

He was taken to London by his uncle almost immediately after the incident. While in London, he began deploying his football skills. Though his parents were murdered, his passion for football was never killed. He played football for his school and later for a local Tandrige League club until Crystal Palace FC approached him. From that point, his career progressed in leaps and bounds.
This player played for England's under 16, 17, 19 and 21 teams between 2005 and 2010 scoring 11 goals for England during this period. He later moved to Wigan Athletic and now he plays for Chelsea.

This footballer is called VICTOR MOSES.
His story is a touching one, We share his pains. We also share his courage. He had a choice not to step into Nigeria again but he didn't take that option. When the call to serve his fatherland came, Moses dumped England and embraced Nigeria. That is patriotism!

Today, we see a Victor Moses bringing joy to every Nigerian including those who may have inspired his parent's death... That is Love!

On Sunday, Moses would stand for the National Anthem and pledge allegiance to a country that couldn't defend his parents. That is faith!

Moses would deliver the "African Cup of Nations" trophy to Nigeria not minding what had happened in the past. That is forgiveness!

Moses rose through bitterness and despair to the limelight of hope and courage.
He never gave up on his country. He persevered. That is purpose!
If someone like Victor Moses, despite the bitter past, Never gave up on Nigeria, then why should we? ONE NIGERIA, ONE LOVE!!!

Virginity test: My pants had blood stains – Pupil

Fourteen-year-old Esther (not real name), one of the victims of the virginity test that was allegedly conducted on pupils of Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Ogun State, by their principal, fears she might have lost her virginity. She spoke with our correspondent, TEMITAYO FAMUTIMI, on Sunday. Excerpts:
Why did you choose to do the virginity test when some pupils ran away?
I did not choose to do the test. After I and other female Senior Secondary School one pupils lined up in front of her (Olufunke Aladeojobi’s) office, I fled the scene but she noticed it and sent people after us threatening to deal with us.
Why didn’t you explain to her that you were not interested in the test?
I explained to her that my parents would be mad at me if they got to know that I did such a test without their consent but she brought out a cane and threatened to beat me mercilessly.
What happened afterwards?
Our principal marched me into her office and the school’s nurse asked me to put off my pants and laid me on the bed. She wore a glove, spread my thigh and dipped a finger into my private part. The school nurse then told the principal who was beside her that I was a virgin.
What did your principal do after the nurse said you are a virgin?
The principal said I “should not open my thigh” to any boy or man. She subsequently gave me two Ogun State customised exercise books.
Did you lose blood?
Yes, I lost blood. I didn’t notice it initially. It was the next person who saw me while dressing up that told me that my pants were stained with blood. But, I can’t say if it was the blood from my menstrual period because my menstrual period just ended or the blood was as a result of the virginity test.
Did your principal know you lost blood?
She didn’t because I left the place almost immediately and she was busy attending to other pupils.
How did your parents get to know about the incident?
I washed my blood-stained pants when I got home. I didn’t initially want to tell my mum but she noticed that I was keeping to myself. When she now queried to know what was wrong with me, I explained everything to her.
Did your principal warn you against telling your parents?
No, she didn’t. But I wouldn’t know what she might do to me if she got to know that I told my parents about it because she is strict and we all fear her. That was why I felt reluctant to tell my parents.
How have you been feeling since you underwent the test?
I have been doing fine just that I’m not happy about the incident because my classmates have been looking down on me. They keep saying that we have been “disvirgined.” I feel ashamed of myself.
Are you a virgin?
Yes. I have not had sex before but with what everybody is saying I don’t know if I am still a virgin. I really wish I’m still one.

Happy Birthday Omotola Jolade Ekehinde

The actress clocked 35 today.

Seven Reasons Why Guys Choose One Lady Over Another

Don’t you hate that? You give a guy, the best years of your life or you’ve liked that guy for ages but yet he keeps choosing these tramps over you?
N.B not that I’m bitter about my ex’s new girlfriend or anything…..kmt
So what’s going on? What’s so good about her? What was it that he couldn’t or didn’t see in you? He most likely isn’t going to tell you why but I have seven reasons why he chose her and not you.
1. GOD’S TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME- Timing is everything. It’s not your time to be with him or it will never be your time. Sometimes some things aren’t meant to be.
2. Attraction – Hard pill to swallow but it could be that she’s more attractive than you, in which case you can’t blame him. We all want someone on our arm that we can be proud of but one man’s trash can be another man’s treasure right?
3. Confidence – If you like to constantly point out your flaws just so he could dispute them, chances are he was thinking ‘On to the next one!’ Guys like confident girls who are confident in their own skin. If you were guilty of this, you just gave him the green light to pick a more confident chick, sucks huh?
4. She trusts him- If you were the sort of girl who checked their man’s phone while he went to the toilet or did some military style interrogation when he went out with his boys? That sort of behavior screams crazy/needy/out of control/ neurotic freak. If you trusted him, you might have kept him.
5. She knows he’s not psychic – What do I mean? Basically when a guy asks you ‘what’s wrong?‘ TELL HIM. They are not psychic, they won’t just ‘know’. This kind of behaviour drives guys up the wall, and they hate it. As I always say communication is KEY. I realize I’m guilty of this one *sighs*
6. She understands that his bank account isn’t bottomless – If you were one of those girls always demanding money for this or that, it’s no wonder you found yourself suddenly single. This other chick is probably within his price range.
7. She respects him –If you complained at everything he did instead of giving constructive criticism. No guy likes to stick around for abuse. Odds are this new chick probably shows she appreciates him not just when he does something for her but constantly, guys need love too, you know!
To sum it all up, you and her are two different women and he choosing her has no reflection on you as a woman. He’s made his choice and the best revenge you can do is meet someone who knows your worth and stop thinking about your ex cos trust me he ain’t thinking about you.....

Yobo will lift the Nations Cup trophy, not me – Vincent Enyeama

Super Eagles stand-in captain,Vincent Enyeama has sensationally declared that it is Joseph Yobo who will go up to the podium and collect the Nations Cup trophy on Sunday, not him should Nigeria defeat the Stallions of Burkina Faso.
Enyeama was reacting to questions when he was asked,if as playing captain,he will be the one to go up and lift the Nations Cup if Nigeria emerges victorious on Sunday.
“Joe is still the captain of the team. I am just acting for him when he is not on the pitch. But when he is on the pitch, he is the leader and captain. Anybody can be captain of the team. In fact, all the players are all captains,” Enyeama said.
“We all have the same purpose, which is to work together for the team’s good,”the former Enyimba goal tender added.
“I do not want to take anybody’s position  and that is the way it is. Joseph is the captain and if we win the final on Sunday, he will go and pick the Cup as captain,” said Enyeama who have conceded four goals in his last five matches.
“He has served Nigeria on a number of occasions and he is the man” Enyeama noted.
It is looking like the 1994 incident, where Stephen Keshi, barely played for Nigeria, but was the one who lifted the trophy for Nigeria.
When asked about his success story at the competition,Enyeama said it came from God’s grace.
“As a goalkeeper, I believe so much in God. It is only God who does these things. As the scripture says, the race is not for the swift or the strong but it is the Lord who shows mercy.
Nigeria will now play against Burkina Faso, who defeated Ghana 4-2 on penalty shoot-outs,can Enyeama win the long awaited Nations Cup trophy?

Super Eagles shows their superiority by pummelling Mali 4-1

In one of the biggest one sided semifinals game at the African Nations Cup,Nigeria had a resounding 4-1 victory over their West African neighbours Mali.
Coach Stephen Keshi once again proved his mettle and his knowledge of the Malian team, guiding the Super Eagles to a comfortable win that qualified Nigeria for a seventh Nations Cup.
Nigeria was set on the part of victory, after a nice work from Victor Moses down the right, going past Malian defender, Tamboure and crossed for Echiejile to stoop and nod in for 1-0 .
Brown Ideye made it two for Nigeria, squeezing the ball past goalkeeper Samassa, after a low cross from Emenike,to take the Super Eagles 2-0 up.
The Super Eagles were on a rout from then onwards and Emmanuel Emenike made it three for Nigeria before the break, after his deflected free-kick found its way beyond the Malian goalkeeper.
After Victor Moses was substituted as a precaution for the finals,Ahmed Musa, who came in for him, wasted no time in adding a fourth for Nigeria, beating the offside trap, after collecting a through ball from John Obi Mikel.
Though Mali got a consolatory goal, late in the game through Famtamady, there was no stopping Nigeria as they ran out comfortable winners to qualify for the finals for the first time since the year 2000 in Lagos.
Can Nigeria win the third Nations Cup?

PDP BoT: We must reconcile Jonathan with Obj – Barrister Jalo

The Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP) botched attempts to produce a chairman for its advisory organ, the Board of Trustees, has been a cause of concern to the party faithful. In this interview with Daily Sun, a chieftain of the party from Gombe State, Barrister Jalo Ibrahim warns that stakeholders in the party must first of all resolve the differences between former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and his estranged political son, President Goodluck Jonathan, in order to address the logjam over Obasanjo’s successor as chairman of the party board of trustees.
Excerpts:
Your party, the PDP has been finding it difficult to produce a chairman for its Board of Trustees. Could you please give us an insight into what led to the aborted attempts?
You see, earlier on as far back as December there was a move to conduct the election without a hitch, then suddenly we heard that the acting secretary, Senator Walid Jibrin came out and said they, had not collected letter of intent from contesters so in that case they were now shifting the election to take place on the 8th January which was equally aborted.
But I want you to recall that your paper, in its 10th January edition had erroneously said that Ahmadu Ali was out of the race. I want to make a categorical statement that Ahmadu Ali is still in the race and currently without mincing words, he is going to contest.
I am speaking as his spokesman that come February when Professor Jerry Gana’s committee may have finished their assignment, Ahmadu Ali is venturing to become the BoT Chairman if that election is going to be held. Certainly I am telling you if it is 11 times that this election is to be conducted and if it is human beings that will vote, Ahmadu Ali is going to win. What happened on the 8th of January up to 11, because they started the meeting around 8: 30a.m. and they finished it around 2 p.m. the following day, was that Wali Jibril was unanimously asked by members of the BoT to act as the BoT secretary.
These candidates that we have, about six of them namely, Ahmadu Ali, Tony Anenih, Ken Nnamani, Don Etiebet, Shuaibu Oyedokun, will continue to talk to their supporters and look for their votes. Any one of them that will emerge will certainly be elected through voting. When that meeting started, the entire members of the BoT wanted Walid Jubrin to resign but you know what politics is all about. You know the circumstances that brought in Walid Jibrin. We are not questioning his capability but he was brought in to complement the remaining period when he was serving with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
From what the papers were saying he refused to step down to pave way for Dr Ahmadu Ali. So in that case one of the members particularly the Senate President, David Mark said that since there is this problem let us now appoint a committee headed by Professor Jerry Gana: Ojo Madueke is a member, Governor Shema of Kastina State is a member, with few of them, to see how we can draw eligibility of these contestants since some people were against consensus; at least, let us trim them down so that the election will be held without rancor.
That what was brought in the suggestion by David Mark which was graciously accepted by the President.
But party members were worried that for the second time, even President Jonathan was seated and the election was aborted?
Most of the people that were there that day were out to elect Ahmadu Ali. So it was aborted. Now a committee has been appointed and I believe Jerry Gana may not draw the conditions of contesting this seat more than the rules and regulations and the positions stipulated in our party’s constitution. Our constitution has stipulated in a clear term how it is going to be, how you can become a BoT chairman and who is eligible.
The eligibility is simple. I have a printing press besides being a lawyer. I printed this constitution of PDP more than a hundred times during the period of Ahmadu Ali so I know it from cover to cover. Ahmadu Ali has fulfilled that requirement.
One he is a founding member of the party; two he was a coordinator of the north central zone of the PDP which brought all the governors in the zone under PDP led by Ahmadu Ali. Three, he made efforts to convince these governors to vote for PDP where the President got a 100 per cent votes from the zone and fourth he is a board of trustee member, statutorily.
So, we are waiting for the Jerry Gana’s committee to draw their own guidelines so that we can see how the  BoT chairman will come on board through democratic process.
But Walid  Jibrin and Ahmadu Ali many PDP members argue that they come from the same  zone.
Do you think the constitution will allow a BoT chairman and the Secretary to come from the same zone?
Well, I told you on. I told you Walid Jibrin is only finishing a little period, Obasanjo’s period. But you know politics is about interest. Wali Jibril knows that his tenure has finished but we know in Nigeria there is this god fatherism somebody maybe behind him telling him  don’t relinquish that seat for Ahmadu Ali because when Ahmadu Ali becomes the BoT chairman, he may block me to contest the presidency  come 2015. Mind you, this is not Ahmadu Ali’s view. This is Barrister Jalo’s view.
But the reality on ground, tenure of Wali Jibril has finished. If we are respecting the tenets of democracy, Walid Jibrin case must have been a forgotten case. So people are looking at it beyond now to 2015 and are now concerned about the relationship between the president and Chief Obasanjo, particularly his absence.
Is there a silent power play between the two?
You see, this is an interesting question.
Even during the BoT meeting Obasanjo was conspicuously absent and he has not written a letter to explain why he was absent. But one cannot vividly say that the relation between Obasanjo and Jonathan is sour. We will wait a little time; darkness will come to light.
But many people saw Obasanjo’s absence at the last BoT meeting as a sign of cold relationship between him and the president. Coupled with speculation that Jonathan will contest 2015 election. Well, one cannot say exactly.
As a politician, I don’t believe in rumour mongering. I believe in reality and facts. But the issue is in court and even President Jonathan’s lawyer submitted in court that his client has the right to contest the 2015 general election. That case instituted by Barrister Nwoke from Enugu or so I have followed it to conclusion and there is no judgment yet so the issue is prejudice. It is still  an issue in court.

Photo: Family Friend Rapes, Impregnates 15-Year-Old Girl

Before July 2012 the families of Jolaosho and Adejumo, of Meiran in Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, were best of friends.

But the relationship went sour recently after Adejumo, 40, allegedly raped Jolaosho’s 15-year-old daughter.

After the rape, the girl, who was a virgin, missed her period. subsequent medical examination showed that the 15-year-old pupil of Meiran Community Junior Secondary School was pregnant.

When Punch Metro visited the Jolaoshos on Monday, she was seven-month pregnant and had been forced to drop out of school because of her condition.

She told PUNCH Metro that on the fateful day, her mother, Rachel, had asked her to go to a construction site and bring back a plastic drum borrowed from her by Adejumo.

She said immediately she got there, Adejumo told her that the drum was kept upstairs and that she should go there and carry it.

She said, “When I got there, he (Adejumo) came to meet me. When I was about to carry the drum, he held me tightly. As I was about shouting, he closed my mouth with clothes and tied me with ropes.

“After doing those things, he had sex with me. Because I have not had sex before, I had bruises and blood covered my private part. After the rape, he still left me tied but he removed the pieces of clothes in my mouth.

“I started crying but could not cry aloud. I asked what I had done to make him behave like that.

“After a long silence, he said I should not tell anybody what happened and that if I did, I would die after seven days. He then untied me after using the pieces of clothes to clean the blood in my private part.

“When I got home, my mother was angry that I overstayed but I could not tell her what happened to me because I was afraid I might die.”

The bubble, however, burst when she started falling ill after the incident and was always vomiting.

She said it was then her mother called her to find out what was amiss.

“My mother started suspecting I was pregnant. She called me and asked, ‘are you pregnant? Who made you pregnant?’ It was then I told her that Adejumo raped me and warned me not to tell anybody, else, I would die.

“My mother took me to some hospitals where they conducted tests and said I was pregnant. By that time, it was four months. The doctors advised that because of my age and weight, it would be suicidal to terminate the foetus.

“My parents reported the matter at Meiran Police Division and Adejumo was arrested. At the station, he promised to take care of me and the pregnancy. But since he had been released from the station, he had abandoned me.”

Rachel, who spoke amid sobs, said Adejumo had endangered the future of her daughter and urged the relevant authorities to bring him to justice.

“If any soothsayer had told me Adejumo would do this to my family, I would not have believed it. As if he has done a noble thing, he had been boasting about that, we could not do him anything and that he would show us that we were not his match. I am appealing to the relevant authorities to intervene in this matter and bring him to justice.

“He has wrecked my daughter’s future and people in the neighbourhood have turned her into a laughing stock for something the culprit should be in jail for.”

When Punch Metro spoke with the suspect on the telephone on Monday, he (Adejumo) said it was the devil’s work.

Adejumo said he had sex with the minor on one occasion, but insisted that he was not responsible for the pregnancy.

He said, “I did not do it intentionally. As I speak to you, I cannot understand what happened to me that day. Since that time, I have remained unstable.

“As for the pregnancy, I do not believe that action led to it. From the scan and tests, we were made to believe she is seven months pregnant but I had sex with her about six months ago.”

The 40-year-old man and father of four said he agreed to take care of  her and the pregnancy in order to avoid problem.

When asked by our correspondent if he would like to marry the minor, Adejumo said he was not ready, but added that if the parents of the girl insisted, he could marry her.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Police Command, Mr. Damasus Ozani, said Meiran Police Station confirmed the story.

Ozani said, “I got across to the station and they confirmed the story that a 40-year-old man confessed to raping one Jolaosho, a 15-year-old girl.

“The station investigated the matter to the point that when it was time to go to court, the father of the girl, Israel Jolaosho, said he had agreed with Adejumo to take care of the girl and the pregnancy. The decision was not with the police consent.”

Ozani said since then, they had not come to the station to enable the police to take the matter to the court.

“Rape is a case the police will not be compromised. It is a serious matter and the police do not joke with it. It is a matter against the state. It is just the attitude of some of our parents, who maybe because of cultural beliefs, illiteracy or otherwise, that treat such matter without the needed seriousness,” he said.

Should I Go to Prison? An Article by Comedian Omobaba No1

The story of the ALUU 4 still remains fresh in our memories. 4 young individuals with a promising future were brutally murdered by an ignorant and inhuman community over alleged stealing. Months after the ugly incident, our beloved country's judicial system is yet to make justice prevail over the death of these fellas.

With the alarming increase in corruption among public office holders and lack of accountability from our leaders, one can't help but wonder why 'assumed' thieves are hunt to death while the real thieves caught with billions of naira (public fund that could have been used to better the lives of the masses) are given sentences - little amount as fine and less properties seized.

Considering previous 'culprits' that have milked this nation of its wealth and how they are still being celebrated, one is left to ask if the quickest and safest way to be a billionaire in this country is to convert public wealth for personal use and when you are caught, prosecuted and sentenced, you are sent to a 'special' prison for a few days and fined a minute amount that won't make you sweat? At the end of the day, such people become freemen and still recognised with awards.

How do you intend to inspire hard-work, commitment and excellence in the minds of the younger generation when the likes of Cecilia Ibru, Bode George, Tafa Balagun, Lucky Igbinedion and Diepreye Alamieyesigha embezzled billions of naira not rightfully theirs and when tried, were given lenient sentences.

The 'Giant of Africa' lacks world class health care facilities for proper medical services, the nation lacks infrastructure that will drive the economy forward. The highly skilled, exceptionally talented, ambitious professionals and artisans are inadequately rewarded and uncelebrated. Our education system is in shambles. Meanwhile, a set of people amass wealth at the expense of the average citizen. What a shame!

Does that mean to be a billionaire in this country, all you have to do is steal from the nation's purse, end up in prison for 2 years and pay a fine of #750,000? I'm just saying, should I go to  prison?

Court strikes out case against 'Facebook lover' accused of attempted rape

A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday struck out a case of attempted rape against Arthur Obiora for “want of diligent prosecution”.

Obiora, 26, was arraigned on Nov. 9, 2012, over an alleged attempt to rape one Nkiruka Akabuogu at 1004 Flats, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He faced a three-count charge of threat to life, attempted rape and causing bodily harm to 21-year-old Akabuogu. Obiora, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The magistrate, Mrs A. O. Awogboro, who took over the case from Mr Martins Owunmi on Wednesday, following a reshuffle in the Lagos State Judiciary, granted a prayer of the defence to strike out the case.

Mr I. O. Fubara, the defence counsel, had asked the court to strike out the case since Nkeiruka and her family had not appeared in court since the inception of the case in November 2012.

After the arraignment, the case had been adjourned till Dec. 12, 2012 and again till Jan. 18, before it came up on Wednesday but no prosecution witness showed up.

Fabura had told the court during the last hearing that the families of Obiora and Akabuogu had “entered into discussions on how to resolve the case amicably’’.

The prosecutor, ASP Augustine Orji, told the court that the police informed Akabogu that the case was coming up on all the hearing dates.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akabogu was initially hospitalised as a result of injuries sustained during the incident but has since been discharged.

NAN recalls that Orji, had told the court that Obiora met Akabuogu on Facebook, a social media network. He said the defendant subsequently invited her to a nightclub in Apapa on Oct. 31, 2012, after which they retired to his home at Block 10, Flat 317, 1004 Housing Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Orji had said that Obiora, who claimed to be an unemployed graduate of Igbinedion University, Okada, and the Centennial College, Ontario, Canada, shut all the doors in the apartment and demanded to have sex with Akabuogu.

: “The accused tried to rape her and also threatened to kill her with a bottle of beer when she refused.
``The girl, fearing for her life, then jumped down from the third floor of the high-rise building.
``Nkiruka was discovered lying unconscious in a pool of her own blood about 30 minutes later by security men in the premises, who then reported the incident to the police.
``The police took the girl to a hospital and after she regained consciousness, obtained her statement,’’ the prosecutor said. (NAN)

How 73-yr-old man stabbed man, 27, to death –Youth leader

More facts have emerged on how a 73-year-old man, Williams Omobude Uwadia stabbed a 27-year-old man, Gabriel Amayahu Aigbosuria, to death at Obagie community near Benin, even as homicide detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Edo State Police Command yesterday stepped up investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The septuagenarian suspect was said to have had a quarrel with the deceased over a parcel of land in the community but the community youth Chairman, Osamuyimen Oghagbon, yesterday, debunked the quarrel theory. He explained that the parcel of land in question was a community land, which the elders gave to Nosakhare Ogbeide to erect a building after the said Ogbeide paid the elders N100,000 for their drink at No. 4, Zabayo Street, Benin City. According to Oghagbon, it was a thing of surprise for the community to see Williams Uwadia along with two youths of the community, Sunday Oyewense and Osagie Osaretin arrive the community with four policemen from Evbuotubu Police Station last Wednesday in an attempt to prevent construction work at the building site.
He further narrated that on seeing Uwadia, Gabriel Aigbosuria challenged him and asked, “are you not one of the elders who took part in sharing the N100,000 elders drink money from Ogbeide?” An enraged Uwadia was said to have suddenly drawn out a kitchen knife and stabbed Aigbosuria in the stomach, resulting in his intestines pulling out. In the ensuing confusion, members of the community apprehended Uwadia, Sunday Oyewense and Osagie Osaretin and handed them over to the policemen who accompanied them to the scene of crime, while Aigbosuria was immediately rushed the Central Hospital, Benin, where an initial surgery revealed that half of the kitchen knife got broken in his stomach.
He was later referred to Time Hospital, Benin, where he died before further medical attention could reach him. Inside sources revealed to Daily Sun yesterday that the four policemen who took part in the trip to Obagie to make arrest did not make entry at the station before and after their trip, just as the two young men apprehended by the community members and handed to the police along with the killer septuagenarian were said to be at large from police detention as at press time yesterday.
Only one suspect, Williams Uwadia was said to have been transferred along with the case file from Evbuotubu Police Station to the state police command on Monday for further investigation. When contacted yesterday, the acting spokesman of the Police Command, Awhara Ejiroro, said the matter would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

Eagles retire Drogba•As Nigeria faces Mali in s/final

Warri Wolves’ player, Sunday Mba, became an instant hero yesterday at the on going Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa when he scored the winner in a 2-1 victory for the Eagles over Cote d’Ivoire to qualify for the semi final . A 78th minute solo effort was all Mba needed to kill the Elephants and write his name in the history books of the competition. The victory has ended the Golden Generation of the Cote d’Ivoire as she was usurped by Stephen Keshi’s plucky Super Eagles at the King Bafokeng Stadium.
Nigeria took the lead against the lethargic Elephants through a wonderful Emmanuel Emenike’s strike in the 43rd minute, before Cheik Tiote equalised with a header just after the interval. In an engrossing second half, Sunday Mba wrote his name in Naija folklore by finishing a hopeful run with a deflected finish past Boubacar Barry. For the first half of action it seemed as if the Super Eagles had turned back the hands of clock and rolled back the years. Gone was the timidity and the nervousness that had characterised their dull group encounters, the side looked bold and brave. In comparison, the Ivorians, so well-fancied before the tournament, looked laborious and lethargic – their casual approach matching the unprofessional nicknames on some of their shirts.
It felt like 1994 as the Super Eagles burst forward, Victor Moses, the nation’s saviour against Ethiopia, was once again influential – his tenacious running and ferocious speed constantly causing problems for the Ivorian defenders. Emmanuel Emenike was also looking to capture the form of the opening 45 minutes against Burkina Faso, although the striker fired over from near point-blank range in the first half. With the interval approaching, Nigerian enterprise eventually paid off. Soon after Yaya Toure had been forced into a shoulder block to curtail Moses’s advance, the Super Eagles won a free kick 30 yards out. John Obi Mikel laid the ball off, and Emenike, with the weight of 19 years of anguish behind him, fired the ball over the wall into the goal.
Perhaps Copa Barry in the Ivorian net should have done better, but few in Nigeria cared, as the finish sparking furious celebration among their massed ranks. The euphoria of the first half was not to last into the second. Moments after Salomon Kalou had been cautioned for simulation in the Nigerian box, Didier Drogba was brought to ground by Efe Ambrose. It was the Super Eagles’ moment to look inert, and they were promptly punished as Cheick Tiote headed the ball past Enyeama. The keeper promptly remonstrated with his static defence, but the damage had been done. The second half unrolled with both sides looking to attack, and creating a number of opportunities. Elderson went close with a blocked shot when Moses was perhaps better placed.
The miss threatened to be costly, that was, until Sunday Mba decided to introduce himself into the game’s narrative. Running boldly at the Ivorian defence, the striker, included at the expense of the likes of Peter Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins, sent a deflected shot up and over Boubacar Barry. It prompted ecstatic scenes in Rustenburg, as Stephen Keshi’s men played out a nervy final 10 minutes as the Ivorians pushed. John Obi Mikel must get a mention for a terrific tackle on Traore, but the whole team will be heralded as heroes after a glorious victory and well-deserved progression. They now face Mali in the semi-final on Wednesday.
